The morning of September 19th, 1793, the Vendean generals D' Elbée and Lescure are called to help by Charette. They positioned at this place, waiting for the Republicans.
At the intersection of the Nantes-Poitiers Royal Road and the road from Cholet to the Sables, this place is a strategic crossroads for the Blues coming from Clisson or Montaigu, since the Republican plan of Saumur was to lead them to Mortagne.
The day before the battle of Torfou, a mass is said for Vendean following d’Elbée and Lescure in the alley leading to the Couboureau Castle. A huge crowd attends the mass, probably celebrated by Abbé Bernier. This refractory abbé refused to take an oath to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, is an Angevine priest, considered as the apostle of the Vendean cause.
